The repository should have a simpler name.

In the spirit of what was discussed a while ago -
in one of the dev meetings - FreeCAD repositories
should have simple title-cased names.

Was there ever any technical reason the name uses
the Python package structure freecad prefix?

If not, I'd propose something like: Addon-Template

For those worrying about the renaming breaking
any existing documentation & examples, it won't.

GitHub automatically creates redirects
that cover all relevant uses cases.

( Of course those should be updated over time )

The idea was to make sure addons workbenches refer to freecad. For example:
https://github.com/looooo/freecad.gears

I know this is not very consistent because of the history of freecad. In the past we added a way to add a workbench as a namespace package. This means that the workbench is installed into the freecad namespace. So you have imports like:
from freecad import gears
The naming of a workbench-project can follow this:
freecad.gears

Right.

Well since we want to now get all addons to use the modern Python module
structure with the <Repository> > freecad > <Addon> layout, the template
which new authors use should also reflect that and not teach the old ways.

The biggest problem with the current name is that it focuses on "workbench" creation, when indeed many if not most addons should not be Workbenches. We do need to do a bit of work on the cookiecutter stuff to better-enable the creation of non-WB addons, of course, but a first step would be to changing the name of this repo. Since it's already hosted in the FreeCAD organization, it should probably follow the convention of the dropping the word "FreeCAD" from its name as redundant. So I think "Addon-Template" is reasonable, assuming that we eventually plan to modify the scripting to allow generation of non-Workbench addons.
